The owners of the site are all avowed conservationists and are permitting much remedial environment work to be undertaken in conjunction with ‘Natural England’ through the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme (H.L.S).
The northern meadows which lie above the quarry site are abundant with flora and fauna that thrive on limestone, and a recent survey described it as species-rich grassland identifying over fifty different plants. Lichen covered limestone dry stone walls border the site, giving shelter to many invertebrates including a strong hibernacula of Adders.
Wildlife abound upon the site, and the current owners have been proactive in declaring a large area of the workings as an ‘Exclusion Zone’ in order to protect any bats that may reside in the cliff wall caverns.
The Mendip Cave Rescue Organisation also are frequent guests of the Quarry, practising lifesaving techniques and systems above ground, and learning skills which can be transferred underground when required.
The Quarry management regularly run guided walks around the site (by arrangement only), and often have specialist guest speakers available to enliven the educational talks and lectures.
Please register* on our website if you would like to make an arrangement to visit for educational purposes, or contact the Quarry Manager directly.
